About
AMINIMAL | Working Between the Lines, the exhibition features Mit Jai Inn, Andreas Reiter Raabe, and Giles Ryder, three artists from diverse generations and cultural backgrounds, each deeply invested in notions of art-making. The exhibition points to a gesture and a proposition — that of rethinking concepts regarding the intrinsic tension between subtraction and addition, control and chaos, which we are repeatedly confronted with in art history. What forms arise from asymmetrical order? Can there be a convergence between controlled structures and the untamed? Can repetition cause novelty? In posing these questions.
Mit Jai Inn embodies a dialogue between accumulation and subtraction and is known for his tactile and sculptural paintings. As a pioneering figure in contemporary Thai art, Jai Inn’s work pivots on the repetition of gestures to create “skins” of colors that emphasize the role of materiality in the face of a maximalist approach, where layering becomes a form of expression and resistance against the conventional notion of minimalism as purely reductive.
Andreas Reiter Raabe, hailing from Austria, is an artist and theorist. Raabe’s work often explores geometric and essential forms, particularly the line and the circle, and the use of everyday tools and materials to question the boundaries of space and perception. His minimalist approach, rooted in a deep understanding of form and function, contrasts with the layered complexity of his installations, where minimalism becomes an exploration of the essential rather than a mere aesthetic reduction.
Giles Ryder, originally from Australia and residing in Bangkok, uses neon lights and everyday items to engage with the vibrant chaos of life. His work embodies a non-objective ethos, where repetition and instinctive action generate compositions that pulse with energy and intensity. Through his exploration of color and light, and his interest in the primal aspects of art-making, Ryder invites the viewer into a space where order dissolves into chaotic yet essential beauty.
For the first edition of AMINIMAL | Working Between the Lines, conceived as a traveling exhibition, Mit Jai Inn, Andreas Reiter Raabe, and Giles Ryder present existing and newly created works and installations as a ground for encounter and possibility. Hence the title, intended as a play on words. On one hand, AMINIMAL points to the dichotomy inherent in the practices of the three artists. By juxtaposing “animal”, “minimal,” and “a-minimal”, the artists question the very foundations of minimalism, proposing that the essential and the elaborate are not opposites, but rather different expressions of the same impulse. This duality extends to the ritualistic nature of the artists’ practices, where animalistic forces meet creativity. On the other hand, Working Between the Lines, becomes a conduit for both minimal and maximal expression. Visually, the works resemble fossils or artifacts while also embodying futuristic forms. Representing defining moments in each artist’s practice, the works are essential and instinctual, emerging from a complex yet simple form: the line that connects the doing, the undoing, and the redoing. The reference to abstraction informs the work’s presence through repetitive engagement with materiality, and with the power of form and color, thus creating a vibrant atmosphere.
Through their distinct approaches, the artists explore these intersections, revealing the fertile ground that lies not in certainty but in the spaces “between the lines.”
